I am new to Voipo and VOIP service in general. I realize I really don't need to know much to use the service, but I'm fairly technical and would like to learn the basics - primarily so I can understand what needs to be done for BYOD and how to configure/use services. I'll start out with the provided ATA, but I presume I will end up with better voice quality in the long run if I use actual IP phones. I'd also be interested in using an old computer to set up a PBX (just for self-education).

Can anyone point me to some good self-education resources / reading? I don't need info on TCP/IP or general networking topics, just those specific to VOIP for SOHO use.

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I'm not positive what I read to start learning about VOIP but I'm pretty sure I read anything and everything even if it was way over my head since I just wanted to soak up information on it.

Better quality may be a result of using IP/sip phones, I have only used IP phones over an ATA device, but the carrier (VOIPO and upstream providers) are also limited to quality as well, you're going to be using the g711 codec.

some recommended reading and video watching:

Also, forums specific for PBX's are a good place to read, just remember to search before you post since your questin has likely been asked before.

Happy travels in your Voip adventure. After six years here is where I've ended up:

A good ATA obihia (http://www.obihai.com/)
A good IP phone Aastra 6700 series (http://nerdvittles.com/?p=207)
A good PBX distro (Freepbx + Astrisk) pbxinaflash (http://pbxinaflash.com/community/index.php?threads/pbx-in-a-flash-2-0-6-2-4.11848/)

Recommend sites:
VOIP Tech Chat (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/voip)
pbxinflash (http://pbxinaflash.com/)
Nerdvittles (http://nerdvittles.com/)

Voipo keeps the wife happy connected to the house wiring with a good ATA and DECT 6.0 cordless. A good playground with pseduo pbx features is voip.ms (http://voip.ms)
