View Full Version : Now Peering with Comcast

For any Comcast users here, I have good news.

Our datacenter, The Planet, has added a new 10Gbps peering link to Comcast.

This means that if you use Comcast, your connection will go straight from the Comcast network into the datacenter instead of being routed out through an ISP along the way.

This is live and up and running now. The routing may be enhanced a little to shave a few Comcast hops off soon, but so far it seems to be pretty good as is.

Ironically, I thought Comcast was always criticized for hindering 3rd party VoIP?

Yeah, they're usually the number 1 target. Lately they've been fine.

At home I have Comcast and AT&T DSL. I like a variety to test and kinda rotate between them.

Hopefully soon I'll have U-Verse. The DSL is 6 Megs and I actually have U-Verse boxes in a closet but no U-Verse availability. I've been questioning why such a big deal was made about everything being prewired for U-Verse when a year later, it's still not available.

I still prefer the 200Mbps Time Warner connection at the office. :)

i got to play with one of those connections once...

In My Dreams!

How many hops is your average for getting off Comcasts network?

We lost 4 when out ISP bought the system from Charter...

I had Comcast for years and for the most part they were ok. Quite a few outages though and never an honest answer. I have some friends in their local operations group, so I was able to find out what was going on, besides the obvious overloaded nodes.

Since my VOIP is my landline and since we have storms and hurricanes in the Miami area, when ATT finally offered naked DSL(dry loop), I chose to change. ATT has a far better track record of staying alive during these storms, and with my bunch of UPSs, I keep my necessary boxes alive when the power goes out.

Although I was getting twice the speed at less money with Comcast, I tend to think that the VOIP works better with DSL.

Perhaps Tim's peering with them would have blurred that difference, but I feel more comfortable with the chance of DSL staying up during these outages.

For me it's in the DC on the 5th hop. So 4 on Comcast.

It was the same way here after Ike. Comcast was down for over a month in some neighborhoods. AT&T DSL seemed to be back on for everyone as soon as the power was so not sure if it even went completely down.

Technically it's a Gig-E with fiber coming directly in. I'm not hardcore technical but my understanding is that we can go up to 1,000Mbps within hours on it.

Since it's just for office customers, there was no need to go all out and pay for that much BW right now. 200 Mbps is plenty :)

You can try sip.voipwelcome.com and incoming01.voipwelcome.com for examples of two possible routes.

Just curious... is the Comcast peering still in place as you migrate to the new datacenters, and start using The Planet for storage (as in broom closet)?

Yes, it sure is. Both the DC datacenter and Dallas datacenter have 10Gbps connections to Comcast.

Dallas (Infomart Facility)

10Gbps - Level3
10Gbps - Global Crossing
10Gbps - Internap
10Gbps - Comcast
20Gbps - NTT America
10Gbps - SAVVIS
10Gbps - Equinix (peering)

Washington DC (365 Main Facility)

10Gbps - Level3
10Gbps - Comcast
10Gbps - Equinix (peering)
20Gbps - Internap
10Gbps - NTT America

Seattle (Sabey Facility)

10Gbps - Level3
20Gbps - Internap
10Gbps - Comcast
10Gbps - NTT America
10Gbps - Qwest
10Gbps - SIX (peering)

I just gave up on AT&T and switched to Cox. The speed is double what the DSL was and they will not offer UVERSE to customers just for internet service. They also have no plans to ever increase DSL speeds.

My DSL was crap for the three years I have lived here. Was great at my previous home. Got really bad the last two weeks. DSL connection was dropping every hour or so. I had Cox before and switched to AT&T for faster speed. Now Cox is faster and it works so I guess I will stick with them until AT&T makes a new plan.

I had my DSL modem replaced 8 times. I have 3 of the 8. One of those 2-wire wireless units and the 2210's. Hello Ebay.

So anyway moral of the post if you want UVERSE you had better want their expensive tv service. Oh, and they caught on to the trick where you call and order UVERSE and cancel after a month and keep the UVERSE for internet. Now they will switch you right back to DSL. (Which really must cost them more). I would like to see them drop DSL in markets like mine where they have UVERSE cabinets every mile and use it instead even if its at the DSL speeds. At least then you will not be using PPPoE and get the speed they advertise.

Would be nice if Cox would now do what Comcast did.

What about for the other data centers? I know you moved me out of "The Planet" so I would like to see what my path is currently like to you all.

Edit-
I found these interesting myself. They have ips for tracert tests, their own speeds tests, and all kinds of cool stuff.

My speed test to their Dallas center
